Brilliant! Light! It hit me. Somewhere a painting was brewing. I felt like I couldn’t capture it fast enough. My camera was my tool for collecting images that day. Last August we were visiting best friends and three of us took off in the late light – driving the back roads outside of Hood River. Sort of unintentionally, we wound our way slowly down a dirt road. I called out, “stop” every couple hundred yards, “I want to shoot here”…with my camera. My husband, John and my friend, Sue obliged. They had their cameras too.
Deepening shadows and long light were creating effects on the land worth gathering. Sensuous – diffused – and hot. Slowly, slowly, down the hillside…the road opened up to a junction with one way leading to Dead End Farm!
Bosc pears hung everywhere – the trees hanging heavy under their golden glory. Spotlights of sun hitting the surface and lost quickly in the dark branches, creating dark, dark space behind. Weaving in and out.
Bold is a painting from that day – painted in my studio later, remembering how the light hit me – that perfect moment. Looking, for a few minutes in August and feeling for a lifetime.
Bold – as a title , is a metaphor for me – put yourself out there – for any one…courage to be an artist and pursue your vision of parts of this world…courage to be a teacher, a doctor, an aid, an IT technician, a spouse, an electrician, a researcher, a chef, a dishwasher, a parent…

Was just contemplating some Hood River bosc pears…pear ginger crisp or tart? Either a good balance to the pumpkin cheesecake and chocolate/rum/pecan pies already started…
